CHAPTER 15
Maddox knew she shouldnât have asked that question. It only brought Jessica back up into a conversation she only wanted to be about getting to know Avery better.
âI donât think itâs the same, actually,â Avery replied, leaning back against the other wall that lined the side of the room.
âYou donât?â
âNo, for starters, it was high school and college. She was my first love, but I donât know that it was really love; at least, not the adult kind of love, where you have to pay your own bills, do your own laundry, and then deal with the conversations you have when youâre a teenager.â
âLike what?â Maddox asked, finding Averyâs thoughts endlessly interesting.
âWell, in high school, you can talk about if you want to get married and have kids, where you want to live, and what you want to do for a living. When youâre an adult, youâre not just talking about those things anymore. Youâre living them. Youâre planning on the kids, or youâre not. Youâre moving to that city, or youâre not. Marissa and I only got to the talking phase. Sheâs living out the decisions with someone else.â
âWho?â
âOh, I donât know. I donât mean that I know sheâs with someone. I just assume. Most people our age are married with kids or married and about to have kids or just in serious relationships.â
âExcept for you and me.â
âThat is what it feels like sometimes, isnât it?â Avery let out an exasperated sigh.
âYes, it is,â Maddox answered. âAnd I really am sorry about what I did by the pool. I donât think I realized I was doing it until after I actually did it, but I get how that came off to you and probably to her.â
âCan I confess something?â Avery asked, offering a smile.
âYes.â Maddox smiled back at her.
âIt was kind of hot,â Avery said.
âIt was?â
âYeah, it was like you were claiming me as your own or something. I mean, maybe you werenât, but it felt that way to me.â
âTrust me, when I claim you, youâll know,â Maddox said before she could think too much about it. âSo, are you hungry?â She cleared her throat and changed the subject the moment she felt the blush creep up her cheeks. âYou brought quite a spread.â
âYes, and I canât believe we managed to get it up here without dropping anything or making a mess.â
âI havenât eaten anything all night,â Maddox said, reaching for a carrot stick. âWhich is probably why I feel tipsy right now.â
âMe too,â Avery replied.
They were silent for a few minutes while they snacked. Maddox hadnât realized how hungry she was until she started eating. She finished everything on one of the plates and felt terrible until she looked at the other plate and noticed how empty it was.
âI needed that.â Maddox leaned back again. She looked over at Avery, who was taking a drink of her water. âSo, about earlier.â
âThe pool earlier, the beach earlier, the bedroom earlier, or the theater earlier?â Avery asked.
âWeâve been in just about every room of this house, havenât we?â Maddox asked through a wide smile.
