CHAPTER 15

Maddox knew she shouldn’t have asked that question. It only brought Jessica back up into a conversation she only wanted to be about getting to know Avery better.

“I don’t think it’s the same, actually,” Avery replied, leaning back against the other wall that lined the side of the room.

“You don’t?”

“No, for starters, it was high school and college. She was my first love, but I don’t know that it was really love; at least, not the adult kind of love, where you have to pay your own bills, do your own laundry, and then deal with the conversations you have when you’re a teenager.”

“Like what?” Maddox asked, finding Avery’s thoughts endlessly interesting.

“Well, in high school, you can talk about if you want to get married and have kids, where you want to live, and what you want to do for a living. When you’re an adult, you’re not just talking about those things anymore. You’re living them. You’re planning on the kids, or you’re not. You’re moving to that city, or you’re not. Marissa and I only got to the talking phase. She’s living out the decisions with someone else.”

“Who?”

“Oh, I don’t know. I don’t mean that I know she’s with someone. I just assume. Most people our age are married with kids or married and about to have kids or just in serious relationships.”

“Except for you and me.”

“That is what it feels like sometimes, isn’t it?” Avery let out an exasperated sigh.

“Yes, it is,” Maddox answered. “And I really am sorry about what I did by the pool. I don’t think I realized I was doing it until after I actually did it, but I get how that came off to you and probably to her.”

“Can I confess something?” Avery asked, offering a smile.

“Yes.” Maddox smiled back at her.

“It was kind of hot,” Avery said.

“It was?”

“Yeah, it was like you were claiming me as your own or something. I mean, maybe you weren’t, but it felt that way to me.”

“Trust me, when I claim you, you’ll know,” Maddox said before she could think too much about it. “So, are you hungry?” She cleared her throat and changed the subject the moment she felt the blush creep up her cheeks. “You brought quite a spread.”

“Yes, and I can’t believe we managed to get it up here without dropping anything or making a mess.”

“I haven’t eaten anything all night,” Maddox said, reaching for a carrot stick. “Which is probably why I feel tipsy right now.”

“Me too,” Avery replied.

They were silent for a few minutes while they snacked. Maddox hadn’t realized how hungry she was until she started eating. She finished everything on one of the plates and felt terrible until she looked at the other plate and noticed how empty it was.

“I needed that.” Maddox leaned back again. She looked over at Avery, who was taking a drink of her water. “So, about earlier.”

“The pool earlier, the beach earlier, the bedroom earlier, or the theater earlier?” Avery asked.

“We’ve been in just about every room of this house, haven’t we?” Maddox asked through a wide smile.
